Intercept trainer

Radio Navigator Pro

Intercept trainer

Procedurally generated VOR radial and NDB bearing intercepts, scored on the angle you pick, the heading you fly, and how cleanly you roll out on the course.

7-day free trial, no card required. Includes Just Fly, the Intercept Trainer and the Hold Visualiser. Reverts to the free tier when it ends; you are never charged automatically.

How it works

How the trainer works

Step 1
Get a scenario

The trainer places you off the course and gives you a radial or bearing to join.

Step 2
Choose an intercept

Pick an intercept angle and a wind-corrected heading. Too shallow and you never arrive; too steep and you overshoot.

Step 3
Roll out on the course

Judge the roll-out from the closure rate. You are graded on heading selection, intercept angle and tracking accuracy.

What you get

Included with Pro

  • Randomised VOR radial and NDB bearing intercepts
  • Real-time grading of heading selection, intercept angle and tracking
  • Wind included, so the intercept heading needs a drift correction
  • Seven difficulty levels, from no wind up to a challenging 30-60 kt
  • Included in the 7-day cardless free trial
Included in the free trialCreate an account and you get a 7-day free trial of Pro with no card required. When the 7 days are up your account simply reverts to the free tier, and you are never charged automatically.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How can I practise VOR and NDB intercepts online?

The Radio Navigator Intercept Trainer generates random VOR radial and NDB bearing intercept scenarios in your browser and scores your heading selection, intercept angle and tracking accuracy in real time.

Is the Intercept Trainer in the free trial?

Yes. The 7-day cardless free trial includes the Intercept Trainer, along with Just Fly and the Hold Visualiser. No card is required and your account reverts to the free tier when the trial ends.

What intercept angle should I use?

It depends on how far off course you are and how much track you have left. A 30 degree intercept is the common default for a radial you are close to; larger displacements justify a steeper angle. The trainer grades the choice so you learn where the boundaries sit.

Can I practise intercepts for free?

Not properly. The free tier is a single VOR read on the HSI, so you can fly an intercept by hand but nothing sets one up or scores it. The randomised scenarios and grading are the Pro trainer, which is included in the 7-day cardless free trial.
